Rockstar controls updates for the Max Payne 1 and 2 remake

Remedy Entertainment confirmed in its Feb. 2026 fiscal presentation that the Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes are in full production, but the studio said it cannot provide regular public updates because Rockstar Games controls communications for the project.

The company stated the production phase is underway in the official investor materials on Remedy’s website. During the presentation Q&A, Remedy’s interim CEO Markus Mäki said, “the Max Payne communications are all driven by Rockstar,” and added that Remedy is “working on it hard, so that’s all I can say.” That comment came at roughly the 31:50 mark of the streamed presentation.

Because Rockstar is serving as publisher and managing marketing, Remedy said it will not be the source of regular updates. Remedy emphasized it is actively building the remakes, but public visibility will depend on Rockstar’s schedule and priorities. Rockstar is currently focused on Grand Theft Auto VI, which Remedy acknowledged as the primary concentration for the publisher’s resources.

That dynamic helps explain the long silence since the remakes were announced in 2022. Fans expecting frequent developer updates should plan for limited news until Rockstar decides to open the project to media and marketing activity. Remedy framed its public remarks as confirmation of production rather than a roadmap for future reveals.

Outside of official channels, community development and modding activity for older Max Payne titles continue to appear. For example, a modder recently uploaded an RTX Remix path tracing preview for Max Payne 2, showing what community-driven visual updates can look like while the official remake stays quiet. Given Remedy’s statement and Rockstar’s current focus, updates directly from Remedy are unlikely to appear regularly in the near term. The remakes remain in active development, but public information will arrive only when Rockstar allows it.

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne

Max Payne 2 is a third-person shooter, in which the player assumes the role of Max Payne, but also plays as Mona Sax in a few levels. Initially, the player's weapon is a 9mm pistol. As they progress, players access other weapons including other handguns, shotguns, submachine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, and hand-thrown weapons. To move the game along, the player is told what the next objective is through Max's internal monologue, in which Max iterates what his next steps should be.
