Roblox CEO David Baszucki recently shared a plan that has parents everywhere in a state of surprise: he wants Roblox to become a place where virtual dating can occur. Yes, you read that right. Despite Roblox’s young user base and past safety issues, Baszucki envisions a future where adults can start a date online and then move it to the real world, complete with promises of age verification.
Roblox’s audience is primarily children, with approximately 40% under 13 years old. The idea of turning a platform that’s basically a playground for children into a dating hub is… yikes. Baszucki discussed this on the Tech Stuff podcast, doubling down on his belief that Roblox could be a “wellness platform” that helps people address loneliness and improve social connections. He suggested that for “21 and up, ID verified, opted-in users,” dating might be possible someday.
He says, “a virtual date to start, and then if they connect, move to the physical world.” The CEO also stressed that age verification would be mandatory. However, anyone following online safety knows how easy it can be to bypass such checks, there’s a reason many doubt the effectiveness of these systems, especially on platforms that cater to kids.
Roblox has faced serious accusations before. There was a disturbing case where a predator used the platform to groom and assault a 15-year-old girl, and ongoing concerns about inappropriate content and grooming. The company has been trying to tighten safety rules and use AI moderation, but adding dating into the mix feels like a risky move. Parents are right to be skeptical.
Baszucki insists his job is driven by ethics and that technology like AI can help make Roblox safer. He wants to shepherd this “inevitable form of technology” with civility and optimism. Maybe that’s what he was going for, but it sounds a bit like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse.
He also responded to parents uncomfortable with Roblox by saying, “if they’re not comfortable, follow their intuition.” That’s a fair point, but the platform’s direction still feels off when you consider who’s on it.
There’s a loneliness epidemic, he says, and Roblox can be part of the solution. I get it. Virtual worlds can help people connect, especially young folks struggling with mental health or isolation. But turning a space filled with kids into a dating venue, even if only for adults, raises plenty of questions about safety, enforcement, and the message it sends.
