Riot Games Responds to Controversial Hextech Chest Changes in League of Legends

Riot tackles backlash over Hextech Chests while promising improvements for future battle passes.

Riot Games has stirred up quite the conversation with their latest changes to League of Legends, especially regarding those beloved Hextech Chests. If you’ve been following the news, you know what I mean.

As they checked in on the 2025 season one updates, Riot dropped a bombshell by announcing the end of free Hextech Chests. Yep, you heard that right! For years, players could earn these chests without spending a dime, an excellent way for everyone to snag fabulous cosmetics. But now? They’ve moved them solely to the store, and guess what? Players have to buy them.

This change didn’t sit well with many in the community; some players even threatened to boycott! The team acknowledged that these chests had become a primary method for unlocking skins, which impacted skin sales. As a free-to-play title, League of Legends relies heavily on those purchases. They claim it’s not just about profits but rather about long-term viability for the game.

The developers know they’ve stirred up some frustration and are trying to fix things by improving battle pass rewards. Future battle pass skins will come with more “distinct visual effects,” plus if you unlock a skin, it’ll also grant access to its corresponding champion if you don’t own them yet! Oh, and those missions requiring purchased skins? Gone! Some tougher missions are getting reworked too, sounds like they’re listening!
