Qatar Bans Roblox Over Child Safety Concerns Amid Platform Controversies

Qatar has fully blocked access to Roblox, citing concerns about the safety and well-being of children using the platform. The ban comes as worries about harmful interactions and content on the site continue to rise, especially given the social nature of the game, where users can create and play games while interacting with others.

When users in Qatar try to open Roblox, whether through app stores or on computers, they receive error messages like “No Network. Please try when connected to internet.” or “This site can’t be reached.” It’s clear the platform is no longer accessible there, though it stays available elsewhere.

Local media in Qatar mention that the ban aims to protect children from what they describe as “moral and safety threats” found within Roblox’s digital spaces. Reports of “virtual assaults” and breaches of cultural and religious values on the platform have raised alarms. Bahaa Al Ahmad, an AI and technology researcher, told Al Sharq that these open digital spaces might negatively affect children’s psychological and social development because the interactions feel very real.

Roblox has not publicly responded to the ban in Qatar yet. Meanwhile, the platform is also dealing with criticism for banning a YouTuber who exposed predatory behavior by other users. The company sent the creator a cease and desist order, accusing him of several violations, including “simulated child endangerment conversations” and encouraging off-platform communication.

Since then, hashtags calling for boycotts and protests against Roblox have spread online, demanding the reinstatement of the creator’s account and stronger measures to protect young users. Even a US congressman has spoken out, urging people to sign a petition aimed at improving safety on the platform.

It’s a lot to take in. How will Roblox respond to these growing concerns? And will other countries consider similar actions? For now, kids in Qatar won’t be able to play Roblox at all, and the conversation about child safety on social gaming platforms is only heating up.
