PUBG Creator Unveils Ambitious New Open-World Game and Free Tech Demo

Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene is back in action with his studio PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions, launching an exciting new open-world survival game titled ‘Prologue: Go Wayback!’. This marks the first step in a thrilling three-game plan to reshape our gaming experiences!

The announcement came today, accompanied by a jaw-dropping six-minute trailer that teases what’s to come. Since founding PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions in Amsterdam in 2021, Greene has been working towards delivering something revolutionary, a massively multiplayer world dubbed Project Artemis.

Brendan Greene is The Father of Battle Royale

If you didn’t know already, many fans hail Brendan Greene as the father of the modern battle royale genre. He created PUBG, which hit the scene in 2017 and paved the way for games like Fortnite and Apex Legends. It’s hard not to feel excited about what he’ll conjure up next!

Greene’s latest venture involves building an ‘Earth-sized’ MMO called Project Artemis. But before we delve into that massive world, we’re getting a taste with Prologue: Go Wayback!, a single-player experience promising vast exploration and survival mechanics.

Since Greene launched his projects, sneak peeks have been sparse, and only occasional fireside chats shed light on their progress. But just recently, PC Gamer revealed they’ve crafted an entire planet using cutting-edge manufacturing technology that allows nearly instantaneous loading of expansive areas.

The press release further emphasized this tech enables “the instant creation of millions of maps.” Can you imagine?

In his own words:

“My vision for Artemis is challenging, but we plan to take it one step at a time… With Prologue, we aim to engage players and introduce them to the emergent mechanics.”

This ambitious goal aims to accommodate thousands, potentially millions, of players. Talk about raising the bar! However, we’ll have to wait patiently as they lay down this foundation.

Alongside this reveal comes a complimentary tech demo called Preface: Undiscovered World. It’s built using PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions’ engine named Melba and is available now on Steam! Meanwhile, keep your eyes peeled as Prologue: Go Wayback! is set for early access on PC sometime in Q2 of 2025.

I can’t help but wonder how players will react to these developments. Will they adopt this fresh direction from Greene? Or will they be skeptical, given the lofty ambitions? Whatever happens next could significantly impact our favorite gaming community!
