Sony’s PS5 has now surpassed 80.3 million units sold, moving steadily toward the PS3’s lifetime sales of about 87.4 million. The company reported 2.5 million PS5 consoles sold in the first quarter of fiscal year 2025 (April to June), which helped reach this milestone.
During that same period, Sony also sold 65.9 million PS5 and PS4 games combined, with 6.9 million of those being first-party titles. Interestingly, digital sales dominate the market, accounting for 83% of full game software sales on PS5 and PS4, leaving only 17% for physical copies. This share of physical sales has shrunk compared to last year. PSN’s monthly active users stayed steady at 123 million.
With GTA 6 expected in May 2026, which falls into the next fiscal year’s first quarter, PS5 sales might jump significantly. Sony could team up with Rockstar Games for marketing efforts that link the PS5 closely with GTA 6, possibly encouraging players to pick up the console along with the game. Depending on what new features or improvements the upcoming PS5 Pro offers, we might also see more base PS5 owners upgrading for the best experience.
Wow, 80 million consoles sold is no small feat. I wonder if the digital sales dominance is pushing physical retailers to rethink their strategies. What do you think this means for future console launches? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.
