Circana’s sales data for January 2026 shows the PlayStation 5 outsold Nintendo Switch 2 in the United States, topping the market in both unit sales and total dollars for the month. Compared with January 2025, PS5 hardware sales were down 17 percent. Xbox Series X and S unit sales fell 27 percent over the same period. Sales of the original Nintendo Switch declined by 79 percent year on year. The arrival of Switch 2 this January offset some of those declines. That helped US hardware spending rise 16 percent month on month to a total of $248 million.
Overall consumer spending on video games in the United States for January 2026 reached $4.3 billion, up 3 percent compared with the previous January. Subscription services grew notably, generating $596 million and climbing 23 percent year on year. Circana notes subscription growth coincided with higher pricing across some services. Microsoft raised the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate by 50 percent following its October 2025 announcement, which contributed to the subscription revenue increase.
On the software side, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 remained the best-selling game in the US for January 2026. Console & PC Gaming published a related look at those sales figures in Black Ops 7 tops US sales earlier this week. Final Fantasy 7 Remake climbed back up the charts, jumping from 225th to ninth in the month following its launch on Switch 2 and Xbox Series X and S. Note that Circana’s rankings do not include digital game sales for Switch or Switch 2. With that caveat, the US top-selling games for January 2026 were listed as follows.
