PS5 firmware update adds a system-wide PSSR 2 toggle and is rolling out now

Sony began rolling out a new PS5 system software update on March 16, 2026 that introduces a global toggle for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution 2, the upgraded upscaling technology used on PS5 Pro hardware.
The company described the rollout as staged in its official system-software notice, and advised owners that the update would appear worldwide over the coming days. You can read that announcement on the PlayStation Blog on PlayStation’s site.
If you want to check for the update manually, open Settings, go to System, select System Software, choose System Software Update and Settings, then pick Update System Software. If the console reports you are already up to date, try again later while Sony completes its staged rollout.
Alongside the new toggle, a number of titles will receive dedicated patches that explicitly adopt PSSR 2 enhancements. Sony listed several examples in the announcement; among them are Silent Hill F and Final Fantasy Rebirth, which will get specific updates to take advantage of the new upscaler.
The system-wide switch lives in Settings > Screen and Video. Turning it on attempts to apply the improved upscaler to software that has not been patched for the PS5 Pro. Sony cautioned that forcing the feature into unpatched games might produce visual or stability issues, and the toggle can be turned off if players prefer the previous look.
Sony’s system architect Mark Cerny has previously said the console’s upscaler would get better over time, and the company framed this release as the next step in that work. The update also reflects cross-company engineering efforts with AMD under Project Amethyst, which Sony says will inform future platform improvements.
