PlayStation reportedly developing a new franchise set inside the God of War universe

A former Sony Santa Monica senior writer's LinkedIn entry claimed five years of work shaping the project's narrative, and Bloomberg reporting says Sony plans sequels and spinoffs to support the wider series.

PlayStation subsidiary Sony Santa Monica is said to be working on a distinct franchise that exists inside the same universe as God of War but is not a mainline God of War title.

Screenshots of a former senior writer’s LinkedIn, shared on ResetEra, claim that the writer spent five years shaping “narrative vision and creative direction at Sony Santa Monica Studio for a new franchise within the God of War universe, developing characters, storylines, and original lore that expanded the acclaimed IP.” The ResetEra thread with that LinkedIn screenshot can be found here.

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier wrote that Sony intends to back the God of War line with multiple sequels and spinoffs, describing the plan as several “sequels and spinoffs, like its own smaller version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” and that broader support for the series is part of the company’s approach, and you can read Bloomberg’s coverage here.

Schreier separately said on social media that what Santa Monica is working on “is not a new IP but it might feel like one.” A ResetEra post capturing that comment is at this thread. Sony Santa Monica’s most recent major release remains God of War: Ragnarok. The studio also announced a remake collection of the original God of War trilogy, which reimagines the entries set in Greek mythology.

Industry context around Sony’s longer term platform and release planning may be relevant. For example, coverage has suggested Sony is weighing timing for next-generation hardware and could move a PlayStation 6 launch window into 2028 or 2029.

The available details leave the project framed as both tied to God of War and distinct from the main series. The LinkedIn wording describes building new characters, storylines, and original lore to expand the IP, while Bloomberg’s reporting places the effort inside a wider strategy of sequels and spinoffs to keep the franchise active across multiple projects and timelines.

Do you think a smaller, connected franchise will keep God of War’s tone while letting Santa Monica experiment with new characters and stories? Share your view in the comments and follow for updates on X, Bluesky, YouTube, Instagram.
