Outer Wilds just got a quirky surprise with its latest update! Patch 16, released on Steam, unintentionally placed a photo of the studio founder and producer, Masi Oka, right inside the player’s ship. Yes, the same Masi Oka who starred as Hiro Nakamura in Heroes! This little bug has fans amused and curious about how it slipped through.
Mobius Digital described Patch 16 as a “minor patch” that mainly fixes two PC-only bugs and adds a few names to the credits. The update is rolling out to other platforms later in May, except for the Nintendo Switch, which won’t be receiving it anytime soon. The studio explained that they’re being cautious with updates on Switch due to limited resources focused on their upcoming new game.
Oh man that's a bug that's NOT where he's supposed to be lol. Thank you for calling this out!

One player spotted the unexpected photo and asked Mobius Digital if it was always there or a new addition. The official response was pretty funny: “Oh man, that’s a bug. That’s NOT where he’s supposed to be, lol. Thank you for calling this out!” The studio hasn’t revealed where the photo was meant to appear or if it was intended as a hidden Easter egg at all.
Mobius also shared that the staggered patch release is a way to catch any Steam-specific bugs before pushing the update to other platforms. They emphasized that this approach isn’t a knock on their QA team but a cautious move since their new game is the priority.
Interestingly, the Switch version is being left out because it’s considered a “risky platform” for updates, and the fixes in this patch don’t apply to it. The studio might revisit this decision when considering Outer Wilds for Switch 2.
As a fun side note, Takaya Imamura, the artist behind Zelda’s Tingle, once mentioned he’d love to see Masi Oka play Tingle in the live-action Zelda movie. So, Masi’s face popping up in Outer Wilds feels like a neat little coincidence!
