Nintendo is increasing the cost of the Switch console and related products in Canada, a move that has many people wondering what’s behind it. The company revealed that the change will affect the Nintendo Switch, OLED Model, standard Switch, Switch Lite, as well as both physical and digital games and accessories. This change will take effect soon, but the exact new prices will be announced on August 1 via the Nintendo Canada website.
Interestingly, the upcoming Switch 2 and its games and accessories won’t be affected by this price adjustment. Nintendo specifically stated that the new hardware lineup is excluded from these changes.
So, why only Canada? Well, Nintendo cited “market conditions” as the reason. It’s hard not to notice the timing here, as this follows recent political tensions, including Donald Trump’s announcement of cutting trade talks with Canada. Could this have nudged Nintendo’s decision? Possibly.
This price update also follows similar moves by Microsoft and Sony, who recently raised prices for their Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 consoles and accessories, respectively. Microsoft’s price changes are global, while Sony’s have been limited to certain regions for now.
Insider Gaming reached out to Nintendo for more details on why Canada is singled out and if other markets like the US might see changes, but no official response was available at the time of writing.
What’s your take on Nintendo hiking prices for the Switch, especially since the console is already eight years old? Is this a sign of things to come, or just a one-off for Canada? Drop your thoughts below and join the chat on the official Insider Gaming forums.
