Today Nintendo released system update 20.4.0 for the Nintendo Switch 2, a small mandatory firmware refresh required for continued online use. It arrived on September 1 (September 2 outside the US) and mostly includes security and backend fixes rather than new features.
Most consoles will download the latest system update automatically when connected to the internet. The installed menu version can be checked in System Settings and an update can be started manually if necessary. The download should be small in the majority of cases, and the console may need to restart when the update finishes. The update is required to keep online services active.
The release notes describe the patch as primarily security and backend work and do not advertise consumer-facing features. Full details are available on the official Nintendo support page.
