The Nintendo Switch 2 has made a strong impression in Japan, selling over one million units shortly after its release. In lifetime sales within the country, it’s already outsold the PS5 Digital Edition and all Xbox Series X|S consoles combined, a notable achievement given its short time on the market.
Many gamers were skeptical about the Switch 2’s appeal, thinking it wouldn’t offer much beyond the original Nintendo Switch or reach its sales heights. However, recent figures show it’s the fastest-selling console in history, at least in Japan.
According to Nintendo Life, the Switch 2 has sold 1,101,136 units in Japan. That’s a solid start, even if it’s still far from the original Switch’s lifetime sales of 20,111,932 units, including the Lite and OLED versions.
Looking closer, the PS5 Digital Edition has sold around 975,486 units in Japan. The Switch 2 has comfortably passed that figure already. Xbox’s combined numbers for the Series X, Series S, and Digital Edition add up to 679,427 units, meaning the Switch 2 has nearly doubled Xbox’s lifetime sales in Japan within weeks.
Upcoming titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond could keep this momentum going for Nintendo’s new console. It makes you wonder how long this strong start will last…
