Nintendo is ensuring its upcoming Switch 2 game cards are visually appealing and decidedly unappetizing. As high hopes build for the console’s launch on June 5, 2025, the company has taken steps to prevent anyone from accidentally munching on these tiny cartridges.
The Switch 2, a follow-up to Nintendo’s wildly successful gaming system, promises improved hardware to handle demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077. However, there has been some chatter about rising game prices that consumers aren’t excited about. One aspect that hasn’t changed is the physical game cards, now sporting a vivid red design.
In keeping with their previous model, Nintendo has made another effort to make the Switch 2 game cards taste awful. Yes, you read that right! A deliberate choice was made to ensure these items were not inviting.
Nintendo Switch 2 Game Cards Will Still Taste Horrendous
According to an exclusive report by Gamespot, Nintendo continues this trend of unpleasant tastes in their new cartridges. This decision aims to keep younger players and pets safe from accidental ingestion.
Takuhiro Dohta from Nintendo stated: “We don’t want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption.” He added humorously, “We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you’ll spit it out.” Thankfully, for those curious folks who might lick a cartridge out of sheer wonder or folly, there’s no actual harm done beyond the terrible taste!

The original Switch‘s cartridges were coated in denatonium benzoate. A bittering agent is used explicitly to prevent animals or children from consuming potentially harmful objects. Even more amusingly, during its development phase, some individuals at Nintendo gave them a taste test themselves!
Kouichi Kawamoto shared his experience: “When the Nintendo Switch was being developed, I did lick it once but never again. I can’t believe that other people are trying that.” So there you have it; indulge your curiosity at your peril!
