Nexus Mods, one of the largest platforms for PC game mods, is adding age verification for adult mods specifically in the UK and EU. This move comes in response to recent regulations, such as the UK’s Online Safety Act and the EU’s Digital Services Act, as well as guidance from Ofcom. The platform is known for hosting a wide variety of adult mods, such as those for Stellar Blade, which have been quite explicit.
The new age verification feature aims to keep adult content accessible to those who are legally allowed to view it, while also fulfilling Nexus Mods’ legal duties to protect younger users. This verification will only apply to users located in the UK and EU; elsewhere, the current system remains unchanged. I wonder how smoothly this will work in practice—age checks can sometimes be a bit clunky, you know?
Changes to Adult Content Handling
The platform has also updated its Terms of Service to include more precise definitions regarding illegal content under UK law, as well as its safeguards for children. These clarifications refine the language surrounding content that was already banned but required more explicit clarification. New content tags will help categorize mods better, including:
- Pornographic
- Extreme Violence
- Harmful substances
- Suicide
- Self-harm
- Depression
- Body stigma
- Eating disorders
- Swearing or Profanity
- Sexualised
Another important update is the introduction of automated detection for Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). Any content flagged will be removed immediately, the user will be banned, and the matter will be reported to the National Crime Agency. This is a significant step forward in protecting the community, and it also demonstrates the responsibility Nexus Mods is taking.
Also, the site is revamping its block and mute systems. The old ‘Blocked Authors’ feature is being replaced with an ‘Ignore’ option designed to be clearer and more helpful. Some of these changes have already gone live, while others will arrive gradually over the next few weeks and months.
By the way, Nexus Mods recently changed hands after its founder sold it following 24 years at the helm.
