Doug Bowser, president of Nintendo of America, hinted that a new Mario game is on its way to the highly expected Switch 2. Although fans were hoping for an announcement during the recent Nintendo Direct, they were met with news about Donkey Kong Bananza instead.
The last major entry in the Super Mario franchise, Super Mario Odyssey, hit shelves eight years ago. Since then, many players have eagerly awaited a follow-up. In an interview with CNN, when questioned about the absence of a mainline 3D (or even 2D) Mario title slated for Switch 2, Bowser reassured fans that something will eventually come along. “Stay tuned,” he said. “You know, we have a long, long catalogue and a long list of [intellectual property] that I’m sure will make its way to the platform.”
This statement has sparked concerns among fans who worry that if the team behind Odyssey is developing Donkey Kong Bananza, it might be quite some time before we see another full-fledged Mario adventure from them. However, Nintendo has maintained its usual air of secrecy regarding development teams.
Gamers won’t be left entirely without Mario content upon Switch 2’s launch—Mario Kart World will debut alongside it. This marks the first mainline console installment in over a decade.
