Electronic Arts has announced the establishment of a new development studio, Cliffhanger Games, and simultaneously revealed the studio’s inaugural project. A third-person, single-player action-adventure game based on Marvel’s Black Panther franchise. This news follows EA’s recent announcement of Motive Studio’s Iron Man game development.
The newly minted Cliffhanger Games is based in Seattle under industry veteran Kevin Stephens, former VP and studio head of Monolith Productions. Stephens expressed that Cliffhanger Games was formed on the values of “diversity, collaboration, and empowerment,” essential components in creating an authentic representation of Black Panther’s universe.
According to Stephens, the game aims to give players the experience of embodying the Black Panther mantle in unique, story-driven ways. They are also committed to empowering every team member as they collaborate to bring Wakanda, Black Panther’s universe, to life. As development is still in its early stages, Stephens acknowledged a “long road ahead.”
The team at Cliffhanger Games boasts industry veterans who have contributed to significant titles like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Halo Infinite, God of War, and more. In addition, the new studio will collaborate closely with Marvel Games to ensure the authentic and detailed representation of Wakanda, its technology, heroes, and an original storyline.
“As we begin this remarkable journey, we are excited to be working with Marvel Games to ensure that we craft every aspect of Wakanda, its technology, its heroes, and our own original story with the attention to detail and authenticity that the world of Black Panther deserves,” said Stephens.
The Black Panther game announcement comes as fans celebrate the 57th anniversary of Black Panther’s comic debut this July. Cliffhanger’s mission is to develop an expansive and reactive world, allowing players to truly experience what it is like to become Wakanda’s protector, the Black Panther.
“Our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do,” expressed Kevin.
