MSI to raise prices up to 30%, eye DDR4 support on DDR5 boards and more AI server revenue

United Daily News reported MSI expects a 10–20% PC market decline this year and plans 15–30% price increases while shifting product mix toward higher-margin gear.

MSI is reportedly preparing a series of moves to protect margins as memory costs and supply shortages squeeze the PC market. A machine-translated report from United Daily News said the company planned price increases of roughly 15–30% across gaming products, and estimated an overall PC-market contraction of about 10–20% this year. The report attributed a blunt assessment to MSI general manager Huang Jinqing: “This year is the most challenging year since the company was founded.” as picked up by Tom’s Hardware.

To offset the pressure, MSI is said to be pivoting toward higher-end inventory and pursuing a few specific technical and commercial strategies. Those include signing longer-term contracts with memory suppliers, expanding server business tied to AI workloads, and producing motherboards that let DDR5 platforms accept DDR4 memory modules. Hybrid motherboards that support both generations exist but remain uncommon. ASRock showed an H610 combo board with both DDR4 and DDR5 slots late last year, and the UDN reporting suggested MSI could adopt similar approaches to ease buyers into more expensive product tiers as prices rise.

MSI chairman Hsu Hsiang reportedly said the company was not focused on buying the largest possible volume of memory and was stepping away from the low end of the market for the moment. The idea, according to the reporting, is to sell fewer units but capture stronger margins by pushing customers toward pricier models. The shift mirrors comments from other PC firms that have signaled a premium-first approach during the current memory shortage. The UDN piece also warned that consumer concern about future increases could prompt some buyers to move purchases forward to avoid paying more later.

How this will play out for PC builders and gamers depends on whether MSI’s higher-margin focus holds market share steady while the shop-floor memory situation improves. If memory costs remain elevated, more manufacturers could follow the same mix of price increases, long-term contracts, and niche product offerings.
