Michel Ancel Opens Up About Beyond Good and Evil 2’s Development Woes

Exploring the management struggles behind the long-awaited sequel.

It’s not every day you hear from a gaming legend about the trials of development, especially when it comes to a project as anticipated as Beyond Good and Evil 2. In a recent chat with French outlet Superpouvoir, Michel Ancel opened up about some significant issues plaguing the game’s progress. Grab your favorite snack, settle in, and let’s dive into what he had to say.

Ancel, known for his creative genius behind titles like Rayman, revealed that much of the development chaos stemmed from management conflicts. He painted quite a vivid picture of artistic differences: “On BGE2 , for example, there were too many problems between managers. The artistic director wanted to redo everything constantly, and the game director wanted to make a game of generated dungeons.” Can you imagine being caught in such a tug-of-war? I mean, who wouldn’t want an epic space adventure instead?

It seems this clash didn’t just create confusion but also left teams feeling adrift. Ancel shared how important it is for everyone on a team to know who’s calling the shots. “The producer is supposed to sort things out,” he noted, “but that didn’t happen.” Even Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot had to step in at one point! Talk about high stakes, you can almost feel the tension through the screen.

Reflecting on his departure from Ubisoft in 2020 due to burnout, it’s hard not to sympathize with Ancel’s journey. Shortly after leaving, accusations surfaced regarding toxic leadership within his teams, claims he has staunchly denied ever since. It’s interesting how perceptions can shift so drastically based on internal dynamics rather than public narratives.

As we stand now, Beyond Good and Evil 2 continues its slow march toward completion. Rumor has it that we’re still looking at a couple more years before we see anything close to release. After all those ups and downs since its early days back in 2017, I can’t help but wonder if all this drama will add layers of richness or just more headaches for players once it’s finally launched.
