Marvel Rivals, the popular hero shooter, has just reached an impressive milestone of over 40 million players, as revealed by NetEase during the company’s financial results presentation.
The game splashed the gaming scene, topping Steam’s global seller charts last December and attracting 10 million registered users across all platforms in just its first three days. Following its season 1 update, it regained that coveted spot atop the charts in January.
Financially speaking, NetEase reported net revenues of RMB21.2 billion (approximately US$2.9 billion) for the quarter ending December 31, marking a slight increase of 1.5% compared to the same period in 2023. However, these numbers come on the heels of some unsettling news: several developers from Marvel Rivals have been laid off, including Thaddeus Sasser, the game’s California-based director.
The excitement around Marvel Rivals peaked when it launched its first season last month, boasting 644,269 concurrent players. This achievement places it at number 14 in Steam’s all-time highest player counts, an impressive feat surpassing titles like Apex Legends, Path of Exile 2, and GTA V.
