Images of the new Xbox and ASUS handheld devices, codenamed ‘Project Kennan,’ have surfaced online ahead of any official word. These leaks come from FCC certification filings, giving us a rare glimpse at what might be the next wave of portable gaming hardware.
First spotted by videocardz.com (where you can find all the images), the photos show two models that appear nearly identical at first glance. One is believed to be the ASUS ROG Ally 2, while the other is considered Xbox’s new handheld, developed in partnership with ASUS.
Sharp-eyed viewers will notice the black version features an ‘X’ on the top left button, hinting strongly that it’s the mysterious Project Kennan device. The design similarities suggest Xbox’s handheld will share much of the ASUS hardware, but with Xbox-specific branding and features.
A recent Windows Central report clarified that Xbox’s handheld won’t run Xbox games natively. Instead, it will function as a Windows PC, much like the current ASUS ROG Ally, but with an Xbox Guide button and more prominent grips for comfort.
Judging by the images and the design cues, this seems to hold. The Xbox device looks like a Windows-based handheld with Xbox branding rather than a dedicated Xbox console in handheld form.
The release timing remains unclear, but a launch later this year seems plausible, given that these FCC images are now public.
