Jack Black, who voices Bowser in Illumination’s follow-up, told GamesRadar that the film leans heavily on the 2007 Wii classic Super Mario Galaxy and should satisfy longtime fans.
“I am a sworn to secrecy, but there’s tons of Easter eggs, and anyone who loves that universe will be very pleased with the way that it’s been brought to the big screen.”
The movie draws not just from Galaxy but also drops nods to Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Wonder, visible in the first trailer and other early materials. The headline cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Black as Bowser, Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina, and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. The film opens in theaters on April 3, 2026.
Black’s comment lands alongside other early reporting about the project, our earlier coverage goes into the trailer, Rosalina’s voice, and the April 2026 release date in more detail here. The cast list and the trailer also show a few cheeky references to the broader Mario catalog, though some elements like Yoshi have only appeared in leaked material so far.
The film follows the $1.36 billion success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and aims to bring the spacebound, gravity-bending aesthetic of Galaxy to the big screen with a stacked voice cast.
