A Monster Hunter Wilds player on Reddit says they tracked down a likely cause of severe PC performance problems and found a surprising workaround. Reddit user de_Tylmarande posted a long breakdown of tests they ran after noticing the game ran smoothly on a friend’s account but tanked on their own. The difference, they say, was DLC ownership. Their friend owns all the games DLC. The Redditor only had the base edition. After a series of 1:1 comparisons, they concluded the game repeatedly checks for DLC ownership and that those checks were hurting CPU performance.
They wrote that once the game detects installed DLC it stops the frequent checks and performance improves. In their tests an account with no DLC hit “heavy and stable FPS drops down to like 20-25 in hubs,” while an account with all DLC bought ran “80+ FPS.” The user repeated the test on a second PC and reported the same results. Rather than purchase every expansion to verify the theory the player built a small mod that tricks the game into thinking all DLC is present. The mod does not install or pirate DLC. After activating it they reported that “performance went through the roof” and that, in their words, “the game literally flies.”
The Redditor urged caution and said they do not recommend players use similar mods. They also told Capcom about the findings and called the issue a bug rather than an intentional performance throttle. They warned that if Capcom ignores the problem they would finish the mod and release it as open source as a last resort.

If the hypothesis is accurate, changing how the game checks for DLC could help many players. Monster Hunter Wilds currently sits at around 49% positive user reviews on Steam. Console PC Gaming documented the wave of negative Steam reviews and player complaints about PC performance in October 2025 coverage of the review drop.
Capcom has previously said it does not expect the same PC performance risks for Resident Evil Requiem. That comment came during a financial Q&A in November when the company contrasted the two games system architectures and said it is developing Requiem to run smoothly across a range of PC specs.
For now the Reddit tests offer a clear diagnostic path for players who want to test performance differences on their own machines. The player who posted the findings passed their notes to Capcom and asked the developer to look into the DLC check routine.
