Rockstar Games is reportedly deep into creating GTA 6‘s multiplayer mode, promising the most significant leap for GTA Online yet. With a planned release date of May 26, 2026, details about the online experience are finally emerging, and they sound pretty wild.
The new online mode, codenamed “GTA6MP,” is said to support up to 64 players per session at launch, with ambitions to eventually push that number to 96. That’s a massive jump from GTA Online, which maxes out at 30 players on next-gen consoles. Imagine the chaos and fun packed into those larger lobbies!
One of the coolest bits? Rockstar seems to be working on a system called Fluid Access. This aims to eliminate loading screens and clunky invite menus when switching between multiplayer activities. The idea is to keep players in the action without interruptions, allowing smooth transitions and interactions across sessions. I don’t know about you, but waiting through loading screens always kills my vibe.
Cloud gaming was initially on the table, but after Stadia flopped, Rockstar is apparently cautious about going all-in. Still, it seems like Xbox Cloud Gaming is on their radar, so maybe some cloud-based features will sneak in down the line.
Another neat feature is session fluidity—players might interact with others across different sessions without leaving their own game world. That sounds like a big step up from the current system, which can feel pretty isolated sometimes. Could this mean more dynamic and unpredictable multiplayer moments? I’m kind of hyped to see how that turns out.
Currently, the cap is 64 players per session, but Rockstar might tweak that number before launch. We all know development can change directions, but the goal is to make GTA 6 Online a more seamless and ambitious multiplayer experience than ever before.
Interestingly, this report comes shortly after claims that Rockstar rejected several GTA 6 story ideas for being “too dark.” Guess they want to keep things balanced for the online community while delivering a solid single-player narrative.
Until Rockstar confirms anything officially, treat these details as rumors for now. Still, considering how much GTA Online has raked in over the years, it makes sense they’d push for some significant upgrades in the next game.
