A game that hasn’t even hit the shelves yet is already being talked about as if it’s won the lottery. Grand Theft Auto 6, the crown jewel of upcoming releases, could pull in an astounding $1 billion in pre-orders alone before we even get our hands on it later this year. The talk surrounding GTA 6 is palpable. A gaming research group has thrown out some seriously jaw-dropping figures, suggesting that once launched, this title might bring home more than $3 billion within just one year. I don’t know what will if that doesn’t make your head spin!
The Financial Times recently looked at our beloved industry and how much cash GTA 6 is expected to generate when it finally drops. According to DFC Intelligence, we’re looking at around $1 billion from pre-orders. The anticipation for this game seems to be off the charts. Analysts are betting that GTA 6 will obliterate all previous sales records set by its predecessor in 2013.
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two (the parent company of Rockstar Games), shared his thoughts with the Financial Times:
I never claim victory before it occurs. That said, I think Rockstar Games will once again deliver something absolutely phenomenal. Certainly the anticipation is high.
Zelnick didn’t stop there, he also spoke on the current state of gaming and consumer spending:
It’s way too early to believe that this [console] generation is maturing or has reached its apex.
You’re seeing more consumer demand broadly. And the industry, frankly led by us, has an amazing release schedule coming in 2025 and beyond. A hit coming from one company tends to benefit the entire industry.
Let’s not forget the hype train for GTA 6 has already smashed viewership records on YouTube! From day one, after its trailer dropped back in December 2023, fans have been dissecting every little detail as if it were some grand mystery waiting to be solved. Today? It remains one of those videos everyone seems to be talking about, and with a recent high-res version making rounds online, you can bet that chatter isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
