Grounded 2 is preparing to be a solid follow-up for survival fans, with Obsidian hinting that it will arrive on PS5 after its early access period. This matters because the original game was released on PlayStation in 2024, so the sequel landing there is a welcome move for those who stuck with the first on Sony’s platform.
Speaking with Eurogamer, executive producer Marcus Morgan responded to a question about future ports with a teasing smile and the line: “Can’t talk about that right now. But I will say that Grounded 1 is on all of those platforms so…” You don’t have to be a detective to guess what that implies.
The original Grounded spent roughly two years in early access, and Obsidian expects the sequel to have a similar timeline. So, PS5 players might be able to enter Grounded 2 around 2027. Morgan said, “We don’t plan on being in early access forever, but you definitely need the time. We were in early access for Grounded 1 for about two years ,and that gave us enough time to meaningfully take community feedback and actually adjust the game.” He added that the sequel will take “roughly that window again, but the appropriate amount of time to make it right.” Patience, then.
While Obsidian shifts attention to the sequel, they aren’t just abandoning the original. Morgan assured that Grounded 1 will continue to receive maintenance and won’t disappear anytime soon. “It’s not going anywhere if people still want to play Grounded 1 as well,” he said. However, any new story expansions and features will be exclusive to Grounded 2, so if you want fresh quests and content, you’ll need to jump into the sequel.
Obsidian brought Grounded to PS5 and PS4 in April 2024 as part of Microsoft’s initiative to port Xbox games to other consoles. Titles like Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, and Sea of Thieves were part of that wave, and it looks like Grounded 2 will follow suit.
