Genshin Impact is introducing a new age verification step for players in the United States. This step must be completed by a specific deadline to avoid permanent account deletion. This update follows legal requirements and a previous settlement with the FTC concerning data handling and protections for minors.
miHoYo, the developer behind Genshin Impact, announced in a blog post that starting May 20, 2025, US players will be required to verify their age. This process will be accessible during login or account registration.
Players must submit their age information by July 18, 2025. Failure to do so will result in account suspension, including deletion of in-game records and chat history. Importantly, due to legal restrictions on accessing account information, there will be no further notifications after suspension.
The account will be permanently deleted if the verification is not completed by July 20, 2026. This means all progress, characters, and items will be lost.
Losing an account with powerful 5-star characters is scary for many players.
This new requirement is part of miHoYo’s compliance with a $20 million fine imposed in January 2025 related to the game’s gacha system and how it handled minors’ data. The company committed to adding an age gate and parental consent protections for children and young teens in the US.
Completing this verification is crucial for US players to keep their accounts intact. It reminds us that even in popular games, legal regulations can directly impact how we access and maintain our progress.
If you’re a US player, I’d recommend setting a reminder for these dates and completing the verification as soon as it becomes available. It would be a shame to lose your hard-earned characters and weapons after investing so much time.
