Gearbox says ‘quit and restart’ as Borderlands 4 shows PS5 Pro performance drop

Borderlands 4 has been showing a gradual drop in performance on PS5 Pro, with framerate falling the longer players stay in a session. Gearbox’s leadership has suggested a simple temporary step of quitting and restarting the game while development staff work to identify the underlying cause.

CEO Randy Pitchford advised the restart workaround in a post on Twitter, calling the problem a “known issue of perf dropping on PS5 pro after several hours of continuous play” and apologizing for the friction caused.

Several players have been capturing the slowdown in action, with footage demonstrating in videos that sustained play sessions can leave the game running at much lower framerates.

Creative director Graeme Timmins confirmed that the team is looking into reports and said on X that they think they “have an idea” but had not yet confirmed a fix. In another post, Timmins answered a player’s question about a possible memory leak, saying the issues are being investigated and there was nothing to share yet.

Problems have not been limited to consoles, with coverage noting performance complaints on other platforms and Pitchford offering advice to PC players in a separate piece, suggesting some users are trying to run the game at demanding settings on older hardware, about expectations and resolution choices. Another brief Pitchford comment appears in a separate post, where he notes that different players have different performance targets.

Reaction across social channels has been active as players post tests and discuss temporary workarounds while waiting for a formal patch from Gearbox.
