The Fallout community might finally have a reason to get excited, as rumors suggest Fallout 5 has been greenlit at Bethesda Game Studios. This comes after a project called Blackbird was cancelled at ZeniMax, apparently so resources can be redirected toward Fallout. It’s been a long wait, over ten years since the last major Fallout release, if you don’t count the 2018 MMORPG Fallout 76.
During a recent episode of The Xbox Two podcast, Jez Corden from Windows Central hinted that Fallout 5 is moving forward. He mentioned how Microsoft’s layoffs and the cancellation of Project Blackbird seem tied to this shift in focus. However, the exact team working on Fallout 5 remains unclear, leaving fans guessing about the studio’s lineup.
Previously, it was believed Bethesda only had a ‘one-pager’ outlining Fallout 5’s scope, basically just a concept at best. Now, the game being greenlit points toward a real commitment to development, even if details are scarce. Rumors also swirl around multiple Fallout projects in the works, such as a Fallout 3 remaster and possibly something linked to New Vegas, likely tied to the success of the Fallout TV show, which recently wrapped its second season production with a December release planned.
What Fallout 5 will look like remains a mystery. Will Bethesda stick to single-player roots or try multiplayer again? Will the setting stay in the United States or venture into new territories? Jonathan Rush, the creative director on Fallout 76, has said the series will never leave the US, but who knows if that will hold forever?
