Playground Games announced on January 22, 2026 during Xbox Developer Direct that the long-in-production Fable reboot will launch in Autumn 2026 on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation. The studio framed the project as a faithful return to the franchise. Playground emphasized that the game will be a fully open world and that players will begin life in the game as a child in a local village before the main story kicks off.
For the first time in the series, Playground says Fable will let players see the whole of Albion from the start. Classic enemies such as hobbes and trolls will return. New enemy types will include cockatrices and other creatures Playground teased during the presentation. Each enemy type carries distinct traits that will force players to adapt their tactics. Playground detailed what it calls the “Living Population,” the simulation that drives over 1,000 citizens across Albion. NPCs will have daily routines. Players can follow them, talk to them, hire them, become their landlord, or evict them. Those interactions feed into a reputation system and the game’s morality framework.
The morality system is explicitly subjective. Playground said citizens will react differently to the same actions. The team used one concrete example: if the player kills an NPC early in the game, that character’s corpse will remain in Albion for the remainder of the playthrough and will influence local housing prices. The presentation referenced the reboot’s earlier promotional material, including the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase trailer featuring Richard Ayoade, and acknowledged the title’s delay into 2026 amid a period of studio restructuring and wider Microsoft layoffs during 2025. The Developer Direct segment is the first extended public look that included the release window and the gameplay details above.
Even though, if you ask me, it’s been a while, and while Playground Games is best known for the Forza Horizon series, the studio’s work on open-world racing has informed its approach to building Albion and the Living Population simulation.
