Whenever I get to write about layoffs inside the gaming industry, I get chills and I don’t really feel good. Today, we have Eidos Montreal which has announced a downsize of its workforce, affecting 97 individuals across development, administration, and support. What is behind these layoffs and why did they happen to be? Well, as per the developer, it’s because of the restructuring initiative by Embracer Group and the overall challenges.
Eidos Montreal has recently issued a message on X, which tries to save the commitment to creating exceptional gaming experiences. The studio says that its passion for creativity remains intact despite recent organizational changes. Eidos Montreal refrained from announcing any new original franchises or commenting on future projects.
Layoffs at Eidos Montreal are part of a more significant trend of workforce reductions and closures in the Embracer Group. This has affected Crystal Dynamics, Fishlabs, and New World Interactive studios. There are currently rumors about the potential sale of Gearbox Entertainment, but we don’t have any more details about it.
