With just under three weeks to go, EA Sports has offered a detailed look at what players can expect from College Football 26 gameplay. A fresh trailer and an extensive blog post reveal new plays, updated systems, and more, building high hopes for the July launch.
The game will arrive on July 7 for Deluxe Edition owners on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, while the base edition will become available on July 10. Fans of the series will likely appreciate the depth provided by EA, especially after the success of College Football 25, one of 2024’s top sellers.
One of the most significant gameplay updates is the expansion of play calling. EA has added over 2,800 new plays and more than 45 new formations to give players a wider range of offensive and defensive options. The variety includes some of last season’s more unusual plays and formations, all tuned for players to create strategies that feel true to their favorite programs.
Besides the expanded playbook, adjustments to blocking and defensive coverages bring more depth, while dynamic play-calling and substitutions give players greater control during the game. New player abilities and types are also part of the package, with 10 new player archetypes and 84 rebalanced abilities eager to highlight the diverse skills seen in college football.
Interestingly, EA introduced a new tier of abilities called Heisman Tier. These abilities sit above the Platinum Tier and offer more powerful effects, letting players take over moments on the field in a big way.
The Wear & Tear system, which debuted last year, has been refined. Now, players have more control with customizable auto-subs and sliders, and various bugs have been fixed. This should make managing fatigue and injuries feel more manageable.
Tackling also received a makeover for added realism and impact. EA explained that better-rated tacklers won’t just succeed more often, they’ll do so in a way that stands out. Timing-based mechanics let stronger defenders finish plays with authority, while weaker tacklers are likelier to be dragged or broken through. New tackle types include:
- Wrap Catch Tackles
- In-Range Lunge
- Unprepped Hit Sticks
