Destiny 2’s Paid DLC Temporarily Free Ahead of New Expansion Launch

Bungie offers free access to all Destiny 2 paid expansions for a limited window before The Edge of Fate.

Bungie is giving players a chance to jump into Destiny 2 without spending a dime on its paid expansions, but only for a short time. From July 8 to July 22, fans on all platforms will be able to access every paid expansion currently available for free. This is a sweet setup just before the upcoming expansion, The Edge of Fate, arrives on July 15.

Why does this matter? Well, The Edge of Fate isn’t just bringing a new location called Kepler and some fresh weapons, it’s also shaking up the game’s progression systems in a big way. Bungie will be overhauling the sandbox mechanics, and these changes will be free for everyone, even if you don’t buy the new expansion. Only the campaign and new gear will require a purchase.

Destiny 2 Expansion Open Access Details

According to Bungie’s July 3 blog post:

“Starting July 8… until July 22, all currently available Destiny 2 Expansions will be available for free on all supported platforms (PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Microsoft Store, Epic Games Store). also, all three currently available Episodes will also be free for all supported platforms until July 15. And the cherry on top: all the currencies, gear, Title, Triumphs, and cosmetics earned during the Open Access period are yours to keep.”

Notably, this includes the highly praised The Final Shape expansion as well. The complete list of expansions you can play for free during this period is:

  • Forsaken
  • Shadowkeep
  • Beyond Light
  • The Witch Queen
  • Lightfall
  • The Final Shape

However, the offer doesn’t cover older DLCs like Curse of Osiris or Warmind, which have been vaulted and are no longer accessible, much like the original Red War campaign. Bungie has had some legal issues connected to these earlier contents, so that might explain their absence here.

Honestly, if you’ve been thinking about jumping back in or trying out Destiny 2 for the first time, this window is kinda perfect. You get a ton of content for free and can keep everything you earn while playing. Plus, it’s a neat way to prepare for the changes The Edge of Fate will bring.
