Codemasters has confirmed layoffs as the studio adjusts its focus following recent changes in its game portfolio. This update comes after Electronic Arts announced a pause on all rally game development, which will directly affect Codemasters’ future projects.
The studio issued a statement to VGC explaining:
As a business, we are constantly evolving to meet the growing needs of our players and driving greater focus across our portfolio.
This has led us to look at reducing some roles, while we redeploy as many as possible against our strategic priorities.
Codemasters has been a key player in rally and racing games for nearly thirty years. The UK-based studio was acquired by Electronic Arts in 2021 for $1.2 billion, joining EA’s extensive list of development teams.
Recently, Codemasters revealed F1 25, the latest entry in its annual racing franchise. This is not the first time the studio has faced layoffs. In December 2023, Codemasters underwent job cuts primarily affecting its QA team during a challenging period for the gaming industry.
EA’s announcement about pausing rally game development included the following:
Every great journey eventually finds its finish line, and today, we announce that we’ve reached the end of the road working on WRC.
We hope it remains a source of joy, excitement, and the excite of rally racing. We’ve poured our hearts into making it for fans, and we know you’ll keep the passion alive.
Currently, Codemasters has not disclosed the number of employees affected by the current layoffs.
