Capcom Spent Two Years Securing Toshiro Mifune’s Likeness for Onimusha’s New Hero

Capcom negotiated for two years to use Toshiro Mifune’s face for Onimusha: Way of the Sword’s lead character.

Capcom’s new Onimusha game, Way of the Sword, has a secret that took a long time to unlock: the iconic face of Japanese samurai legend Toshiro Mifune. Believe it or not, it took two whole years of talks with Mifune’s estate before they could feature his likeness in the game.

When the game was first revealed, eagle-eyed fans immediately spotted that the main character looked just like Mifune, who starred in countless samurai films during his career. This wasn’t just a nod or coincidence; the developers wanted to capture that iconic warrior spirit.

According to an interview with Game Watch (translated by Automaton), director Satoru Nihei and producer Akihito Kadowaki were determined to use Mifune’s face from the start. The deal wasn’t finalized until 2022, which hints that the game’s concept was brewing as early as 2020. That’s some serious patience and dedication for a face!

The reason behind this choice? Mifune perfectly represents the kind of hero Capcom wanted to create, a warrior who fights with tenacity, covered in blood and mud, rough but unyielding. That tough, gritty archetype was a perfect fit for their take on Miyamoto Musashi, Japan’s legendary swordsman and the inspiration for the game’s protagonist.

Kadowaki explained, “We were very particular about making our new protagonist, Musashi, a brand-new character. And in that sense, we were determined to use Mifune’s face to portray him. With how much we were particular about the details, we are confident that he turned out to be an exceptionally great series protagonist.”

So, what do you think? Does Mifune’s face suit the new hero of Onimusha: Way of the Sword? I gotta say, it’s kinda wild to see such a legendary actor’s image brought into a current game after all these years. Yikes, the dedication here is real!
