The original map of Call of Duty: Warzone, Verdansk, has made its comeback, and it’s already impacting player counts on Steam. With this reintroduction, concurrent players have surged significantly, creating buzz within the community.
Today, April 3, Warzone and Black Ops 6, packaged together under the “Call of Duty” launcher on Steam, saw a spike to over 114,000 concurrent players. This marks the highest player count for Call of Duty in 2025 thus far. However, it’s still shy of the all-time peak of 491,670 players, recorded in November 2022. Currently, Call of Duty ranks as the No. 8 most popular game on Steam.
While Warzone is free-to-play, it is listed under the Call of Duty launcher, which includes paid titles like Black Ops 6. Therefore, it remains unclear how many players engage specifically with Warzone. Additionally, performance statistics from consoles such as Xbox and PlayStation remain undisclosed since Verdansk’s return.
The nostalgia factor seems to be a primary strategy for reviving interest in Warzone. Reports suggest that if the reintroduction fails to keep existing players or bring back former ones, there may not be a “Warzone 3.” It’s worth noting that the current version is simply a renamed iteration of Warzone 2.0, leaving questions about Activision’s success metrics for these updates.
As always, with game updates like this one—and especially when nostalgia plays a significant role—it’ll be interesting to see how long player engagement remains high after the initial surge.
