A Reddit post has surfaced showing an Xbox Game Pass Premium ad on a console featuring the cover art from 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, raising the possibility that the original Modern Warfare 2 could be added to Game Pass.
The discovery came via a Reddit user who shared a screenshot of the Xbox advertisement. The image lists familiar Game Pass staples like Sea of Thieves and Hogwarts Legacy, but also includes the familiar soldier-on-stairs art for the 2009 Modern Warfare 2. That version has never appeared on Game Pass, so the inclusion in an official-looking ad is at least eyebrow-raising.
Take the find with caution, because mistakes happen. One obvious source of confusion is the 2022 Modern Warfare 2 reboot trilogy entry, which is already available on the service in some regions. It is possible the art was used accidentally, or the ad was testing creative assets. Still, fans have long hoped classic Call of Duty entries would roll into Game Pass after Microsoft acquired Activision, and the ad would be the clearest sign yet that the publisher is cataloguing legacy titles for the subscription.
We recently covered Xbox’s Game Pass lineup when the company revealed its early November titles, including a Call of Duty entry, which provides some context for why an ad like this might appear on consoles now: Xbox reveals first 11 Game Pass titles for November, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
For folks who want to see the discovery for themselves, the Reddit post with the screenshot is available online. The community reaction ranges from hopeful to skeptical, with several users noting the possibility of an asset mix-up between the 2009 classic and the 2022 reboot.
If the 2009 Modern Warfare 2 does land on Game Pass, it would extend the subscription’s roster of legacy Call of Duty games and make the classic more accessible to newer players.
