If you’ve been feeling cramped for space on your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4 because of the Call of Duty HQ app, there’s some relief coming. Activision is making current Warfare 2 and current Warfare 3 standalone downloads, which will help clear up some storage on your console starting today.
At 5pm BST / 9am PT on July 29th, these two titles will no longer be part of the Call of Duty HQ launcher. Instead, they’ll become separate downloads. This means the app won’t show them on its game select screen anymore, and any related data will be removed from the HQ app itself.
But what about the content inside the app? Well, any old game modes from current Warfare 2 and current Warfare 3 within Call of Duty HQ will vanish completely by August 7th. Content from these games that’s part of Warzone will stay untouched. The main goal here is to reduce the app’s size, which can balloon to over 200GB depending on what you have installed. That’s a hefty chunk of space!
Last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will remain inside the launcher, and Black Ops 7 is planned to be included when it launches later this year. So this isn’t the end of the Call of Duty HQ app, just a tidy-up to make it more manageable. Black Ops 7’s release date isn’t confirmed yet, but it’s expected to compete with Battlefield 6 this holiday season, which is rumoured for October 10th on PS5.
One interesting side effect of the HQ app is how it’s affected Trophies. Since all games funnel into the same launcher, new Call of Duty releases haven’t had their own Platinum Trophy since 2022. Instead, their Trophy lists have been combined under the original current Warfare 2 listing. This won’t change even though current Warfare 3 is becoming standalone now.
So, are you glad the Call of Duty HQ app is slimming down a bit? It’s kinda nice to have a little extra breathing room on your console, isn’t it? Let me know what you think in the comments below.
