Bungie’s upcoming live-service shooter Marathon has been delayed indefinitely, shocking fans and developers alike. Apparently, the dev team only learned about the delay simultaneously with the public, which hints at some serious internal problems at Bungie.
According to journalist Paul Tassi, who has a solid track record with Bungie-related scoops, the team was left out of the loop until the official announcement. Can you imagine finding out your game’s release is pushed back just by seeing the news? Yikes.
The delay isn’t exactly a surprise to those who have been watching the game’s rocky path. Things haven’t gone smoothly since the release date was revealed in April. The gameplay reveal didn’t excite many, and even the closed playtest didn’t generate much talk, especially with other extraction shooters like ARC Raiders stealing some spotlight.
Then there’s Sony’s recent comments, admitting they want to avoid the mistakes made with Concord, another troubled live-service title. This suggests the problems at Bungie might be deeper than publicly known, and the decision to delay Marathon was probably a smart move to give the studio breathing room and reduce negative attention.

From the minds behind Halo and Destiny, Marathon is a team-based FPS extraction shooter set in the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV. Players form crews of three, battling rival teams and hostile security forces. They gather weapons and upgrades as they try to survive and keep their loot for future runs. The game promises best-in-class gunplay with multiple maps and modes catering to all skill levels.
It sounds cool, but will it ever come out? With the original September 2025 release date skipped and the holiday season dominated by Ghost of Yotei, a 2026 or later launch seems more likely. Do you think Bungie can pull it off after all this? I’m curious.
What’s your take on Bungie’s handling of Marathon so far? Drop your thoughts below. I want to know if you think the delay will pay off or if it’s a sign of bigger issues.
