Today, it was revealed that Bungie is cutting off 220 jobs, which is about 17% of their workforce. Pete Parsons, Bungie’s CEO has stated in an article that the company has to cut off its workforce due to rising development costs, and overall conditions. The company is focusing its efforts on Destiny and Marathon, which means they had to make some tough decisions.

The layoffs aren’t just affecting the lower levels of the company but instead every level including executive and senior leader roles. The officials also shared this information on X.

This morning, we shared an important update with the Bungie team on the difficult decision to eliminate 220 roles at Bungie.

Parsons said that this decision wasn’t made lightly and that Bungie tried every possible option before coming to this decision. To mitigate the impact, Bungie is deepening its integration with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). Over the next few quarters, 155 roles will be integrated into SIE, saving a lot of talent that might have otherwise been lost. Sony has been working closely with Bungie to identify these roles, showing a real effort to retain as many employees as possible.

In another move, Bungie is spinning out one of its incubation projects into a new studio within PlayStation Studios. This project is an action game set in a brand-new science-fantasy universe. It’s a bold step and one that could lead to some exciting new developments down the line. For the past five years, they’ve aimed to ship games in three enduring global franchises.

Even though it looks very rough for Bungie, the developer still has over 850 team members working on Destiny and Marathon. Until further information, stay tuned!
