Bungie Developers Desired Player Housing in Destiny 2

Insights into Bungie's consideration of player housing for Destiny 2.

Have you ever considered how nice it would be to have your own space in Destiny 2? The idea of player housing has been floating around the community for some time now, and it’s fascinating to hear that developers at Bungie were once quite keen on making it a reality.

Liana Ruppert, a former community manager at Bungie, recently shed some light on this topic. In response to a question about why player housing hasn’t entered Destiny 2, she recalled that many developers were genuinely interested in the concept. She remarked, “Oh man, so many devs wanted this when I was there. It’d be so dope, but phew, would a lot of things need to change in the game and resource-wise internally to make that happen with the ROI at a level that would mark it as a beneficial inclusion.” This highlights both the enthusiasm within the team and the practical challenges they faced.

The discussion revolves around how appealing player housing could be for personal enjoyment and as a potential avenue for monetization. Imagine customizing your ship or Last City apartment with trophies from your most significant victories! Players might want to hang Oryx’s sword or Calus’ goblet on display, perhaps inviting friends for fun gatherings inside their cozy gaming nook.

I remember writing about similar ideas years ago. The vision was simple yet rich: creating spaces where players could showcase achievements beyond titles or numbers. Think about having physical mementos like Taniks’ helmet adorning your wall or an armor mannequin displaying your favorite look after completing specific challenges. Wouldn’t that feel like an accurate representation of all you’ve accomplished?

It’s bittersweet knowing that while many devs were excited about this possibility, practicalities led to its dismissal. Technical complexities inherent in Destiny’s engine likely added another layer of difficulty, one that’s all too familiar when new concepts are proposed within game development.

As we reflect on what could have been for Destiny 2, I wonder: How important is personalization in games? Would you enjoy having your own space filled with triumphs? Share your thoughts in the comments! I am Margarita, and you just got blessed!
