Borderlands 4 is preparing to be a major release this year, and the wait is almost over for fans who want to go back into the chaotic world of Pandora. Six years after the last installment, Gearbox is promising some of the toughest bosses ever, a sprawling map packed with 200 hidden collectibles, and plans for extra DLC content to keep players hooked.
The official release date is September 12, marking the day when Borderlands 4 will drop on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo fans will have to hang tight a bit longer, as a Switch 2 version is scheduled for October, according to Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford. This date was confirmed during February’s PlayStation State of Play and was later moved forward in April, so there’s been some shuffling around, but now it’s locked in.
Unlike many current games that offer early access for pre-orders or deluxe editions, Borderlands 4 won’t let players jump the queue. Everyone will have to wait for the official launch, which might be frustrating for some, but it keeps things fair.
Pre-Order Options for Borderlands 4
If you want to lock in your copy ahead of time, pre-orders are live on all major storefronts, except for Switch 2, where those won’t go up until closer to release.
- Standard Edition ($69.99): Includes the base game and the Gilded Glory Pack featuring exclusive skins.
- Deluxe Edition ($99.99): Adds the Bounty Pack Bundle and Firehawk’s Fury weapon skin on top of the Standard Edition content.
- Super Deluxe Edition ($129.99): Packs everything from the Deluxe Edition plus a Vault Hunter Pack and Ornate Order Pack.
There’s some uncertainty about whether upgrading your edition after launch will let you claim all the bonuses, especially the Gilded Glory Pack, which is advertised as a pre-order exclusive. If you care about those skins, pre-ordering early might be the best option.
September’s release window is relatively quiet, so Borderlands 4 could steal the spotlight as one of the biggest titles of the year.
