Endgame
Borderlands 4 continues after the story: post-game progression focuses on challenging content and better loot on Kairos. Players will work through weekly challenge missions, unlock Specializations for deeper build customization, and return to an expanded Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode that progresses without replaying the campaign.
- Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode has been reworked into five unlockable ranks that increase in difficulty. Progression comes from curated mission challenges that test specific builds rather than forcing a campaign replay.
- A new Firmware system provides set bonuses tied to gear; acquiring more Firmware raises stat bonuses. Firmware can be transferred from one item to another, but doing so destroys the original and prevents further transfers.
- Multiple activities are aimed at keeping loot hunting fresh: Weekly Wildcards rotate missions with a guaranteed Legendary, Moxxi’s Weekly Big Encore Boss offers a larger encounter unlocked with Eridium and higher drop rates, and Maurice’s Black Market Machine sends players roaming Kairos for varied rewards. Online matchmaking by intent will make grouping for these activities simpler.
Post-Launch Roadmap
Post-launch content will include both free updates and paid expansions in two main formats: Story Packs and Bounty Packs.
- The first Story Pack, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, brings back Ellie with a cosmic horror angle and a bit bloodier, darker tone. It adds a new region on Kairos, new main and side missions, fresh legendary gear, and the first post-launch playable Vault Hunter, plus skins and vehicle and drone cosmetics.
- Bounty Packs are narrative missions that expand the world and characters introduced in the base game. Each Bounty Pack adds main missions, a boss, new Legendary gear, at least one player skin, a drone skin, a vehicle, and a Vault Card unlocking cosmetics and rerollable gear.
Free seasonal Mini-Events start in October with Horrors of Kairos, which brings new Legendary weapons, cosmetics, and a Weather Variant. Invincible Bosses will return in high-level arenas that use new traversal mechanics and drop powerful Legendaries; a new Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode rank will be released alongside each Invincible Boss.
Launch platforms and dates are set: the main release is on September 12, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and the Nintendo Switch 2 edition arrives on October 3, 2025. The game’s final price was noted in the announcement, and it was confirmed that the game will not carry an $80 tag after earlier controversy linked to the developer.
