Belgium has formally begun a six-year overhaul of its gambling oversight after King Philippe confirmed members of the national gambling regulatory commission, taking effect on September 1. The appointments create a cross-government body tasked with tighter advertising limits, fiscal oversight of operators, and stronger player protections over the next six years.
12 newly appointed officials, six full members and six substitutes, take over the Kansspelcommissie on September 1, according to the Royal Decree published in the Official Gazette. The change will position the Commission to represent five different ministries, bringing broader government input to gambling policy.
Because the Commission now formally represents five ministries, the new members will be asked to balance fiscal oversight, lottery supervision, legal protections, public health concerns, and measures against the online black market. The Ministry of Finance has a central role, including supervision of the National Lottery. Representatives Anne-Laure Mouligneaux and Ignace Vandewalle will focus on operator adherence to tax and fiscal rules. Tom Van Caeckenberghe and Caroline Dujacquier will specifically supervise the National Lottery’s regulatory compliance.
The Ministry of Justice will field Daisy Vervenne and Nathalie Patoussa to lead player protection work and legal responses to unregulated operators. Lena Boons and Ferdinand Van Der Gracht will represent the Ministry of Public Health and focus on addiction prevention and health monitoring. The change is wide-reaching. Officials say advertising restrictions and a growing online black market were key motivators behind the restructure.
