The next Battlefield game is stirring up quite the talk before its official reveal, mainly because of a significant change to its class system that’s got fans talking—and not all in a good way. DICE decided to ditch the classic weapon-class lock, meaning any class can use any weapon. This shift has triggered a lot of debate about what it means for gameplay and teamwork.
Traditionally, Battlefield locked weapons to specific classes. Want a sniper rifle? Then you had to pick the Recon class. But in Battlefield 6, that restriction will be gone. Select players have already tested the game in Battlefield Labs playtests, revealing some of these changes ahead of the official launch. Alongside this, leaks about a free-to-play battle royale mode have also surfaced, but the class system tweak remains one of the most hotly discussed topics.
DICE first explained this new system back in May, but the response was overwhelmingly negative. Fans flooded the replies, with many insisting weapons should stay locked to their classes. Popular YouTuber Westie even called back to older titles, saying, “Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 shows you how it’s done best.” The worry? That removing weapon restrictions might make class choices less meaningful and push players toward a single ‘meta,’ which could kill variety and teamwork.
Despite the backlash, DICE clarified in a July 11 update that they’re sticking with their decision. They acknowledged the calls to revert to the old system but emphasized their goal is to connect both new and experienced players under a universal understanding of Battlefield’s systems. They want to keep fostering teamwork but believe this new approach will help achieve that in a fresh way.
So yeah, while many players are clearly attached to the old weapon-class lock system, DICE is committed to this new direction for now. The class system itself will still have two parts: one that’s customizable and not locked to class (like weapon loadouts and throwables), and another that’s class-defining, designed to support quick gameplay and maintain each class’s identity.
When exactly Battlefield 6 will launch is still up in the air, but it should arrive before March 2026. The official release date will probably be confirmed at the summer reveal event, so keep your stay alert for that.
