Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is Ubisoft’s latest foray into historical fiction, this time plunging players into Japan’s Sengoku period. But here’s the thing, unlike Valhalla, Odyssey, and Origins, it won’t have the favorite Discovery Tour mode. So, no standalone interactive history lesson this time around.
Discovery Tours were a big deal in previous entries. They let players look at the game’s historical settings without combat, turning the games into kinda digital classrooms. Great for teachers and history buffs, these modes helped connect gamers with the past in a chill, educational way.
Ubisoft’s commitment to history isn’t just in-game fluff either. Remember when Notre Dame caught fire? Ubisoft gave away free copies of Assassin’s Creed Unity so people could check out the cathedral before the blaze, and apparently, the scans from the game even helped with restoration. Pretty wild, right?
During a recent Reddit AMA, a fan asked if Shadows would get its own Discovery Tour. Ubisoft answered that instead of a separate mode, the Historical Codex will be integrated directly into the main game for everyone to access. But, and here’s the bummer, no standalone Japan Discovery Tour is planned.

So, teachers wanting to use Shadows to educate might have to play the game themselves and try not to freak out over the blood and sneaky assassinations in front of the kids. It’s kinda ironic, considering the series’ history of blending fun and education.
