Daryl Dixon, the spin-off series from AMC’s The Walking Dead universe, is wrapping up with its fourth season, AMC announced at their recent Comic Con panel. This move might be a big sign that the entire Walking Dead saga is nearing its final curtain, after years of expansions and multiple spin-offs.
Despite AMC’s earlier enthusiasm, greenlighting four seasons before the third season even aired, the show is coming to an end just two years after its 2023 debut. The pace of production has been relentless, with seasons often filming while others were still airing, which is quite unusual in today’s streaming world.
With Daryl Dixon ending, only one show stays active in the sprawling Walking Dead franchise: Dead City. This series, starring Negan and Maggie in New York City, recently got renewed for a third season. However, it hasn’t enjoyed the same spotlight or popularity as Daryl Dixon.
It’s tough to imagine Dead City outlasting the fourth season of Daryl Dixon, which is expected to air around 2027. Beyond that, no other spin-offs have been announced featuring major characters like Rick, Michonne, Carol, or the others still alive. With the main series and its spin-offs like Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Tales of The Walking Dead, and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live all finished, the franchise feels like it’s slowly running out of steam.
Could AMC reboot The Walking Dead? Sure, Hollywood loves a reboot, especially when a franchise has a huge fanbase and some questionable story choices over the years (RIP Carl, seriously). A reboot might even give the series a chance to course-correct and bring back some of the magic.
Alternatively, AMC might announce new Walking Dead projects down the line. However, it’s hard not to feel that this world is running dry, especially with AMC focusing more on fresh properties, such as their growing Anne Rice universe.
So what do you think? Has The Walking Dead finally bitten the dust, or is there still life left in this zombie tale? I’m guessing a lot of fans might be feeling nostalgic and a bit sad about this news, but hey, that’s the way of these things.
