Amazon Games, in partnership with Embracer Group‘s subsidiary Middle-earth Enterprises, has announced plans to develop and publish an MMO game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved The Lord of the Rings series.
This new venture will feature an open-world MMO adventure set in a persistent Middle-earth, incorporating stories from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The game is still in the early stages of production and will be developed by Amazon Games Orange County, the team behind the popular MMO New World. The game will be available globally for PC and consoles, with launch details to be announced later.
Christoph Hartmann, VP of Amazon Games, expressed the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality games to players, whether original IPs or adaptations of long-standing franchises like The Lord of the Rings. Hartmann highlighted the team’s aspiration to offer a fresh take on the world of Middle-earth, expressing gratitude towards Middle-earth Enterprises for their trust in this iconic world adaptation.
Lee Guinchard, CEO of Freemode, also showed great enthusiasm for the project. He underscored the endless creative possibilities of Middle-earth and praised Amazon Games’ expertise in crafting immersive, compelling game worlds and reaching a global audience.
This upcoming project forms part of Amazon Games’ growing portfolio, following the success of their internally developed MMO, New World, and the action RPG Lost Ark from Smilegate RPG. Amazon has also partnered with other industry leaders, including NCSOFT for Throne and Liberty, Bandai Namco Online for Blue Protocol, Crystal Dynamics for the next Tomb Raider game, and Glowmade and Disruptive Games for unannounced titles.
