On January 8, 2026 Age of Empires published an FAQ for its new expansion, The Last Chieftains, outlining what players can expect and when.
There will be:
- Three new civilizations: Mapuche, Muisca and Tupi.
- One revamped civilization: the Inca receive a free update for all Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition owners.
- Campaigns: three new campaigns (Lautaro, El Dorado and Arariboia) with a total of 15 missions, plus an updated Pachacuti campaign for the Inca.
- New architecture sets and regional units for the three new civs and the updated Inca.
- A global renewal of naval combat is available to everyone, and a new siege-ship design will be accessible to the new civilizations.
The expansion focuses on late 15th and 16th century South America and follows leaders who faced both internal conflicts and European invasions. It highlights historical threads such as Lautaro’s resistance during the War of Arauco, Arariboia’s alliances with the Portuguese, and Muisca-era stories tied to El Dorado. Pre-orders are open now on Steam, the Microsoft Store, and Xbox with a 15% discount for a limited time. PlayStation 5 support arrives at launch on February 17, 2026.
For players who already own Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, the Inca campaign and the Inca gameplay updates will be available at no extra cost, while the new civilizations and campaigns are part of the paid expansion. This is the freshest information of what the expansion contains and who it will affect, from single-player campaign fans to multiplayer communities that will have new civs and naval options to master.
