IO Interactive’s demo for 007 First Light showed up during Sony’s State of Play and left a vivid impression, mixing stealth, driving, and cinematic set pieces. That matters because the demo suggests IOI is aiming high ahead of the 27th March 2026 release on PlayStation 5.
Early sections dropped the player into an elegant castle retreat in the Carpathian Mountains, specifically Slovakia, according to the studio, and framed James Bond as a junior agent learning the ropes. At the same time, an expert MI6 operative looms in the background.
Driving is built into the mission structure: a limousine opening sequence serves as both transport and tutorial. At the same time, objectives are outlined through natural dialogue, and later sequences escalate into full-on chases and set pieces that play out like blockbuster cinema.
Stealth moments wore the studio’s familiar DNA from the Hitman trilogy, with a playful chemistry between environmental misdirection and item-based problem solving; the demo included moments where a hosepipe, lighter and a wheelbarrow of leaves were chained into a successful distraction.
Across the castle, careful placement of props, NPC routines and environmental puzzles allowed players to improvise solutions, turning what could be a linear demo into a small sandbox for experimentation.
Developed by IO Interactive, the presentation also leaned into spectacle, a runway shootout, a boarding-stairs pursuit across tarmac and a tense airplane interior battle that unexpectedly required manual flight-balance input from the player before a skydive escape.
When asked about freedom in mission approach, the team described “dozens of approaches you can take.” That claim matters because replayability will hinge on how many of those options genuinely alter the flow rather than being cosmetic variations.
Performance questions appeared in footage watched by the public, and while the demo felt promising in scope, polishing framerate and animations are likely priorities between now and launch; the studio has time, but the calendar is not infinite.

On balance, the demo suggested 007 First Light will be equal parts stealth sandbox and bombastic Bond action, and while some systems will need refinement the scope is undeniably ambitious and worth watching.
